This is one of the coolest events that I’ve attended since I’ve been in Ghana and it had nothing to do with counseling missionaries; and everything to do with Africans improving themselves. The event was called Maker Faire Africa (MFA) held right here in Ghana’s capital, Accra. It was a three day event beginning on Friday, but Tywonn and I just attended a small portion of it today.
The event as it is explained on their website is he aim of a Maker Faire-like event is to create a space on the continent where Afrigadget-type innovations, inventions and initiatives can be sought, identified, brought to life, supported, amplified, propagated, etc.. As I saw MFA, it was a time when Africans from around the continent could gather sharing ideas and inventions. There was time to celebrate each idea and build on it. The inventions were were pretty ingenious, if I must say so. I didn’t need to attend this event to know that Africans are some of the most ingenious folks on the planet as one sees every day things formed into magical displays of creativity.
Some of the items formed were funny quirky things, while others were inventions that can improve the lives of Africans such as the above picture. This picture displays what Americans used to do: Seamtress (this term is used for male and female) . This lady made all of the clothing for the dolls pictured by hand. And they were just miniatures for the adult clothing that she makes daily.
Please check out MFA’s website for other more in-depth articles and videos on African ingenuity.
